A BPO (Business Process Outsource) is a tactic u adopt when u are too lazy n get someone else to do ur work. Of course, u pay this person who does ur work. So u are outsourcing the work to someone else. (Jokes apart, outsourcing is generally done when u don’t have the required skills for that job or when u realize that u can get the work done by someone else at a much lesser cost.)

Client: the lazy, lethargic guy. In the current context, LinkX

Customer: Someone who’s bought something from the Client. Current context, someone’s bought a LinkX router; so this guy is LinkX’s customer…
So here LinkX outsourced their Technical Support work to vCustomer; so anyone who calls the LinkX Tech Support number, would be talking to us, in India.

(Class is dispersed….Break…. Thank God!!!)

Now lemme get some technical terms clear. (People who consider themselves technically sound can skip this class. But somehow I feel there’s something in this class for everyone- the sound n the unsound!)

Internet Service Provider (ISP): The guy who brings the Internet connection to ur place. Usually, he sets up a device called a modem (explained later) for u. ISP’s are generally classified as -cable or DSL. A cable ISP is one who gives u internet thru your cable connection line, the one which goes to ur TV. A DSL ISP is one who gives u internet thru the telephone line. Some common ISPs names in the US are…
Cable-Cox
DSL-Verizon
Back here in India,
Cable-I don’t recollect any.
DSL-TATA Indicom, BSNL

Modem: A device which helps you to get connected to the Internet. As I said above, the ISP gives u this. U can connect 1 computer to a modem and get it online. Mind u, only 1 computer can get Internet at a time.

Router: A device which helps you to get connected to the Internet. U get urself a router when u want more than 1 computer online simultaneously, it could be laptops/desktops. Once the router’s been configured n set up properly then all ur computers can get online thru the router, be it desktops or laptops. Routers formed a major chunk of LinkX’s business. Maybe that explains why most of the calls we received were for issues related to routers.

Hope the technical jargon above has made both the technically sound n unsound alike-mentally unsound!
